I have known Emily since she was in high school and have always thought the world of her, so it was a pleasure and an honor to be asked to photograph her wedding this past weekend in Newport Beach. Although it has been a rainy winter in Southern California, the weather was perfect and the celebration went off without a hitch. Here are a few images of the lovely bride with her new husband, Bryce:

The latest generation of digital single lens reflex cameras is able to capture images in lighting conditions that would have been impossible even one generation ago. This image, for example, was captured at ISO 6400 with a hand held telephoto lens at 1/250th of a second. While a small amount of post-production noise mitigation was necessary, the clarity and relative sharpness of an image like this one, shot in such low light, would have been next to impossible a year and a half ago.

Here, Jesse Sapakie, the Performing Arts Department Chair at a local high school, conducts the school’s choir. His hands and his music are lit by an overhead spot while his face is lit by the reflection of the lights trained on the performers on stage. It’s an evocative image, capturing both Mr. Sapakie’s individual artistry as well as his relationship with the unseen singers in front of him.

These are a few of the performers he is conducting.

I have had a wild and varied week of shooting.  A rock concert, fashion shows, high school homecoming portraits, and the NHRA Pacific Division drag racing championships.  I was booked over the weekend, so was only able to make it out to the track on Thursday and Friday for time trials and gambler eliminations.  Over the course of those two days, I was able to see runs by everything from pickup trucks that topped out at 80 miles per hour to high end dragsters that were clocking in at 190 on the quarter mile track.  I love shooting the early stages of events like this, when the crowds have not yet arrived and I have the freedom to wander all over the track.  It was a fun couple of days.

At the last minute, I was able to scrounge up a media credential to photograph the Bon Iver concert at the Mesa Arts Center last night.  Great band, great venue.  One of the nice things about photographing an up and coming indie band like this is the relative freedom they give photographers.  The rule for photographers with more established acts generally is three songs and out.  Last night, I was able to stay for the full set and the band’s publicist, Lucy Robinson, even graciously reserved a seat for me.  I only sat in it for three songs, because I was wandering around shooting, but it was a very thoughtful gesture. Meet Justin Vernon, Mike Noyce, Sean Carey and Matthew McCaughan – Bon Iver.  And, if you want to check out the band, here is their setlist from last night
