The Road to Primm

I recently had to run up to Las Vegas for a meeting and decided to amble my way home, stopping at a variety of roadside scenes that have caught my eye over the years, although never enough to make me actually slow down. One of the scenes I have wanted to capture is the desolate valley surrounding the town of Primm, which exists for no other reason than to attract some portion of the tourist traffic en route to Vegas.

The tail end of what was likely one of the last rainstorms of the season left the ocean choppy this morning. I drove down to Laguna Beach, where it was still raining, but by the time I arrived in Dana Point, the sky was beginning to clear.

Crystal Cove – Newport Beach, CA

In the thick of a host of thin things yesterday afternoon, I decided it was time to clear the cobwebs. Crystal Cove is a peaceful stretch of beach situated between the much busier Newport and Laguna Beaches. Kelp beds, tidal pools, sea lions porpoising in the wake of fishing boats, and lots of birds. A two hour stroll on the sand, cobwebs gone.

Here is a seagull, standing watch over the sunset.

Power Plant – Dawn

I love photographing industrial facilities. As with so many things, seen from the right perspective, they can be incredibly beautiful. The English photographer, Michael Kenna, has made a series of sensational photographs of power plants and other industrial operations that are worth checking out. In addition to admiring his talent, I am also envious of the access he was granted to photograph these sites. Always tricky, trying to photograph industrial facilities. Security guards tend to get a little antsy when they see the tripod and the long lens. Fortunately, in this instance I was far enough away that I was invisible to the powers that be.

Bare Trees – Utah Lake

Laguna Beach – November 21

I love the ethereal, other-worldliness of this image. It’s a photograph of a couple of fairly ordinary rocks, but the long exposure turns the rocks into mysterious islands shrouded in mist.

Newport Beach – Dawn

Another early morning expedition down to the pier at Newport Beach. Saturday mornings are much busier than weekdays, but I arrived early enough to set up my camera and capture several images before the throngs of tourists and fishermen arrived.
