Republican Leadership Conference – Presidential Candidates

I have just returned from several days in New Orleans where I was photographing the Republican Leadership Conference, an annual gathering of 2,000 or more of the party faithful. It was an interesting glimpse into Republican philosophy and strategy for the 2012 Presidential election and a revelation about the nature of grass roots politics. The conference felt as much like a religious revival as it did a political event. The forces of evil were embodied by Barack Obama and his liberal minions and the instrument of salvation, the messianic figure, was personified by Ronald Reagan, whose image appeared constantly on huge video screens and whose memory was invoked by nearly every noteworthy speaker over the course of the three days. The quality of the rhetoric varied greatly, from tough but thoughtful speeches by Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum to bombastic invective by a variety of lesser party lights. I was disappointed by the absence of Pawlenty, Huntsman and Romney, but the potential 2012 Presidential nominees were otherwise well represented. Here are a few images of those who have declared:

G Family – Just Ahead of the Summer

The season for outdoor photography (or, at least, comfortable outdoor photography) will wind to a close in a few weeks, but we were able to sneak in a family portrait session on a gorgeous Arizona spring day over this past weekend. Had a great time with this family, who are a photogenic bunch.

While the next image is a little unconventional, I love the spontaneity and the genuineness of it. In this fraction of a moment, the camera captures something authentic about this beautiful little girl.

And here is her equally handsome little brother.

Drive the Dream Gala | Arizona Event Photography

Every year, Childhelp, an Arizona-based charity founded to aid abused children, holds its principal fundraiser in conjunction with the Barrett Jackson automobile auction in Scottsdale. The event attracts a number of local celebrities and politicians and usually features a musical performance of some kind. The featured artist this year was Willie Nelson:

Colbi

I recently spent several hours with Colbi and her husband, Sean, photographing them for my stock portfolio. In addition to those more commercial images, we shot a few portraits at the end of our session. Torrance Shipman Would Be Proud

Several months ago, I scheduled a shoot with Lauren, who in addition to being a runner-up for Miss Arizona earlier this year is also a former high school cheerleader. I have been working on a series of images of athletes and artists doing their thing and persuaded Lauren at the end of our shoot to demonstrate some of her signature moves. It turns out that in addition to being lovely, she is incredibly athletic. Here is one of the images from that shoot:

Film Noir

I spent a long day in the studio yesterday doing some stock and portrait work and ended the day by having some fun with my friend Kalynne and a new acquaintance, Toby. I have a lot of editing yet to do on the hundreds of images we made, but here is a quick look at one. Toby has a gun in his hand (don’t worry – it was a mock Beretta) and many of the images have the gun in frame, which obviously gives the photograph a much more ominous feel. And this one, with the sharp contrast between the light and dark sections of the image, could be seen the same way. But to me, it also has a sense of longing or even heartbreak. I’m not sure, though. What do you think?

Emily & Bryce | Arizona Wedding Photographer
