Newport Beach – Dawn
Another early morning expedition down to the pier at Newport Beach. Saturday mornings are much busier than weekdays, but I arrived early enough to set up my camera and capture several images before the throngs of tourists and fishermen arrived.

I was up and out early this morning to photograph the goings-on in and around the Newport Pier in Newport Beach, California. It was an overcast morning, so the line between sea and sky was diffuse, almost unrecognizable, which can make for interesting images. One of my favorite photographers, Hiroshi Sugimoto, has made a series of sensational seascapes using the blending of water and sky to great effect. This was a Sugimoto kind of day.
I arrived early enough to capture several long exposures before the sun came up and then stuck around to photograph the dawn surf patrol.

I have known Emily since she was in high school and have always thought the world of her, so it was a pleasure and an honor to be asked to photograph her wedding this past weekend in Newport Beach. Although it has been a rainy winter in Southern California, the weather was perfect and the celebration went off without a hitch.
